Reads is an innovative digital tool that facilitates the integration of environmental criteria into business management and stakeholder communication.

Reads was developed in collaboration with technology companies, non-governmental organizations, universities, and consulting firms specializing in sustainability and ESG. It is based on the Natural Capital Protocol and its Biodiversity Guidance, incorporating the framework defined by ISO Standard 14.008:2019 on the monetary valuation of environmental impacts and aspects, as well as the LEAP approach of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).

You can use measured, estimated, or calculated values and incorporate various environmental simulation models to facilitate calculations.

Value

The gain/loss of natural capital is measured in specific metrics:

Eviromental Economic Values (EEVs), monetized in US dollars (year 2022)
Impact Units (IUs), a dimensionless metric that improves the representativeness and accuracy of monetary valuation using local adjustments.

Reads uses economic databases based on market prices or shadow prices, which reflect the social cost of impacts.

To make financial projections, Reads uses discount rates to calculate the Net Present Value of the positive or negative impact on natural capital.

Manage

Reads facilitates the management of impacts, risks, and opportunities through the application of the Mitigation Hierarchy and the use of financial models.

Mitigation Hierarchy: This includes avoidance, reduction, restoration, and compensation of impacts. For compensations, Reads calculates the CO2 capture potential according to the guidelines of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and the benefit to ecosystems and biodiversity.

Financial Models: For each management measure, Reads calculates the Net Environmental Benefit and the return on investment based on Cost-Benefit Analysis. It uses financial and operational parameters for this purpose. To make financial projections, Reads uses discount rates to calculate the Net Present Value of the positive or negative impact on natural capital.
